Electromagnetic Stimulation (EMS) Therapy

Your questions answered

What is EMS therapy?

EMS Equipment

The healing power of an electromagnetic field has been known since the time of Ancient Greeks who used magnets, which still are used in a similar manner. During the last century in different countries various types of large machines were developed for a therapeutic purposes. Due to advances in technology they are now available as sophisticated, computerised portable pieces of equipment.

EMS has been widely used in Australia, Japan and Europe (e.g. Germany, Poland, Austria and Czech Republic). In these countries it is often incorporated into conventional treatment. It is to be found in hospitals, clinics (including veterinary) and is used for the ill at home. In Britain EMS has been used in hospitals to speed bone healing.

How does EMS work?

EMS Bench EMS Facial Application

A slow changing magnetic field of low induction (the induction value of the field is within the range of the Earth’s magnetic field) is used for healing and prevention. It is passed over the whole body or selected parts.

The field has a triple effect:
1. Electrodynamic on ionic currents of the organism
2. Magnetomechanic on parts with uncompensated magnetic spin
3. Ionic cyclotron resonance of cations and anions in the body fluids

The selection and combination of different magnetic signals improves transport of ions through cellular and intracellular membranes, thus stimulating correct cell function and regeneration. Biological processes become affected in such a way that the body can return to its natural state of balance, which in turn leads to improved health and fewer symptoms.

Which conditions can be treated?

EMS Therapy is recommended for problems of:
  • Muscular-skeletal system (arthritis, RA, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia)
  • Digestive tract (IBS, duodenal and gastric ulcers)
  • Respiratory tract (frequent infections, asthma, sinusitis)
  • Metabolic diseases (diabetes, obesity)
  • Nervous system (Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, MS, depression, neuroses, migraines)
  • Circulatory system (coronary heart disease, hypertension)

EMS therapy is beneficial during rehabilitation and convalescence from long-term ailments. For example:

  • Stroke patients
  • Post surgery states
  • Fractures
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Burns

In children, EMS helps with

  • Autistic Spectrum Disorders (e.g. sleep problems, sensory integration)
  • Frequent infections (e.g. colds, tonsillitis)
  • Post accident recovery

What does it do for a person?

EMS therapy:

  • Improves circulation and blood flow to tissues and promotes tissue oxygenation.
  • Accelerates energy supply to cells and their metabolism.
  • Rebuilds blood vessels.
  • Facilitates regeneration thus speeding up the healing process.
  • Increases efficiency of the lymphatic system thereby helping detoxification.
  • Enhances immune system function.
  • Has an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect, which reduces pain and allows decreasing drug intake.
  • Helps concentration and memory.
  • Improves sleep quality and reduces stress levels.
  • Elevates serotonin levels.

As well as illness, EMS benefits healthy people. EMS can be used as a prophylaxis to maintain good shape and retain youth, regardless of the subject's age. Athletes and anyone who exercise a lot can try EMS Therapy to improve stamina.

Is it safe?

EMS is an extremely safe method of therapy with no long-term side effects. In rare cases, short-term effects may include slight pins and needles or a feeling of warmth at the site of healing.

EMS Therapy, as a part of magnetotherapy, has been approved by the British Medical Association (BMA) for use in Britain.

The system I use, Viofor, is the only one in the UK to be EU certified and has won prestigious medical innovation awards across Europe. Studies have highlighted the efficacy and safety of the system.

It is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • Pregnancy
  • Active neoplastic disease
  • Active TB
  • Bleeding from digestive tract
  • Severe infections
  • The presence of electronic implants
  • Post organ transplants

EMS Therapy is a supplementary treatment and patients should continue to see their doctors and follow medical advice
